Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Workshop by NIUA

Ahmedabad: The Climate Centre for Cities (C-CUBE) of the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), in collaboration with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) Asia, organised a two-day workshop ‘National Training cum Workshop for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation’ at Ahmedabad on August 29-30. Over 24 city officials from 17 cities participated in the workshop. The workshop began with the opening remarks of Kamila Kristensen Rai, Counsellor, Delegation of the European Union to India, and Shwetal Shah, Technical Advisor, Climate Change Department, Government of Gujarat. Following the inaugural address, Dr Mahesh Rajasekar, Head, C-CUBE, gave a brief introduction of his organisation. Asih Budiati, Team Leader, GCoM Asia, spoke about the objectives of the GCoM, and how the project is helping cities meet their climate goals. Sandy Morris and Anshul Bharma from Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Hong Kong, set the outline of the Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory (GHGI) and Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) in the city. Later they introduced the common reporting framework and demo tool called CIRIS – City Inventory Reporting and Information System (CIRIS). During the workshop, Vaishnavi T G Shankar, Lead, Training and Capacity Building, organised the interactive exercise on climate action planning for cities. During the closing ceremony, Bipin Talati, Joint Secretary, Climate Change Department, Government of Gujarat, introduced the climate initiatives of the state government. In his concluding remarks, Hitesh Vaidya, Director NIUA, stressed the importance of institutional framework and making our cities financially independent.
